Atmel brings Wi-Fi connectivity to the WeChat IoT Platform


Leveraging the Atmel | SMART SAM W25, the WeChat IoT Platform supports the latest Airkiss 2.0 protocol for Wi-Fi provisioning and service discovery and allows developers to seamlessly connect to the cloud.


We love social media here at Atmel, so much so that we’re collaborating with WeChat on their latest IoT platform. The popular messaging and calling app is employing the Atmel | SMART SAM W25 module along with an ATECC508 CryptoAuthentication engine for secure connectivity.

The WeChat IoT Platform delivers cloud services for seamless accessibility to the Internet ensuring every ‘thing’ is smartly connected and supports the recently launched Airkiss 2.0 protocol for Wi-Fi provisioning and service discovery. This new platform — which is currently available in China — provides a complete edge node-to-cloud solution from a single vendor for developers looking to build next-generation apps for tomorrow’s connected devices. Consumers can now instantly link to their IoT gadgets and easily access information via the Weixin mobile app, WeChat’s sister product.

For those who may not know, the SAM W25 module is part of the Atmel SmartConnect family and includes the 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi WINC1500, as well as an Atmel | SMART SAM D21 ARM Cortex-M0+-based MCU and an ATECC508 optimized CryptoAuthentication engine. The unit is ready-to-use and FCC-certified delivering a simple, plug-and-play solution.

Zebra Technologies unveils ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit


This new IoT Starter Kit uses an Atmel | SMART Xplained board.


In collaboration with ARM, Zebra Technologies has developed an ARM mbed Starter Kit for Zatar, an IoT platform for enterprise applications. Powered by an Atmel | SMART Xplained board, the IoT Starter Kit will enable simple, standards-based cloud connectivity for creating next-generation, Internet-aware products integrated with Zatar.

As enterprises are committing to large IoT initiatives, they often require a simple, inexpensive and standards-based artifact to begin development. To provide such a “thing,” ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit for Zatar is a ready-made reference design to rapidly spur apps like enterprise asset management, as well as build and release futuristic concepts into production.

“The IoT is here. To accelerate enterprise adoption, developers and device manufacturers require IoT kits that make it easy to prototype and develop IoT products. The kit will leverage the ARM mbed IoT Device Platform, including mbed OS, and provide a full stack with Wi-Fi connectivity, security and enterprise-grade cloud integration for product developers to use. What’s more, it will enable anyone creating enterprise IoT products to reduce development time and decrease expenses, with the standards-based reference design that integrates right into Zatar.

The IoT Starter Kit will use the Atmel SAM W25 Xplained PRO prototyping and evaluation platform consisting of a pre-configured Atmel | SMART ARM MCU dev board — featuring ARM Cortex processors, a fully integrated Wi-Fi network controller and an expansion port to a collection of add-on boards for functionalities such as sensors and user I/O interfaces.

Now on display at Electronica 2014, the SmartConnect SAM W25 module is the industry’s first fully-integrated FCC-certified Wi-Fi module with a standalone MCU and hardware security from a single source. The module includes Atmel’s recently-announced 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi WINC1500, along with an Atmel | SMART SAM D21 ARM Cortex M0+-based MCU and Atmel’s ATECC108A optimized CryptoAuthentication engine with ultra-secure hardware-based key storage for secure connectivity.

With nearly 5 billion connected devices expected next year with another 25 billion predicted by 2020, designers are now demanding more flexible, cost-optimized modules that provide a complete end-point solution from a single vendor. The fully-integrated SAM W25 delivers a secure ‘plug and play’ solution integrating wireless technologies with the design flexibility required for these IoT developers.

The billions of devices in edge nodes IoT applications will be powered by an embedded processing unit such as an MCU, and connected through a secure wireless signal. Though the Atmel SAM W25 module won’t be available until December 2014, Electronica attendees can now get a firsthand sneak peek at the ‘plug and play’ solution. To help accelerate design development, Atmel offers a SAM W25 integrated module on an Xplained starter kit platform which will be available next month as well.
