Brinco is a personal early-warning system for earthquakes and tsunamis

Brinco will alert you if an earthquake or tsunami is headed your way, giving your family time to get to safety.

In an earthquake or tsunami, 30 seconds extra notice can be the difference between life or death. Take for instance, the 7.8-magnitude disaster that struck Nepal back in April, where none of the country’s residents had advanced warning. Had an early detection system been in place, many lives could have been saved. And with scientists predicting the “Big One” to hit the west coast any day now, we could all stand to benefit from having a networked seismic gadget in our homes.

The brainchild of Branden Christensen and Angel Rodriguez, Brinco —  which is Spanish for “jump” — is a smart device that will send personalized warnings through an accompanying app up to 30 seconds before an event occurs. While that may not seem like enough time, it can be plenty when it comes to advising you and your loved ones to take cover.

“The Internet is faster than the seismic waves of an earthquake, and much faster than a tsunami, so you can have an alert before the seismic waves reach your location,” its creators explain.

The gadget connects to the international seismograph network and is able to provide users with voice, flashing light and alarm notifications when an earthquake or tsunami is detected in their general vicinity. When the network senses an initial seismic wave, the information is relayed to the Brinco and an alert is delivered. These audio warnings will then provide further guidance, such as “destructive shaking is expected in 45 seconds that will last one minute” or “mild earthquake expected in 22 seconds.” Each Brinco will receive its own tailored, location-specific warning from Brinco’s Data Center.

In the event of a tsunami, the device will issue status reports each time the NOAA Tsunami Center distributes updates. For example, Tsunami of two meters expected in five hours” or “strong shaking expected in 60 seconds, there is no danger of a tsunami.” These will continue until eventually the Brinco sends a cancellation message.

Like other seimographs, Brinco also measures each tremble of the ground and sends that data over Wi-Fi to national and regional seismic networks, where it can be analyzed along with streams of other data. The more that are deployed, the more accurate and powerful its network will become.

As for its appearance, Brinco boasts a puck-like shape that measures approximately five inches in diameter and one-and-a-quarter inches tall. A Wi-Fi module, an audio amplifier, an audio board, an accelerometer and a real-time signal processing unit are all housed inside its metallic shell.

While both Christensen and Rodriguez have been making seismographs for years with their parent company OSOP, they wanted to make a personal warning system that could ultimately save lives. Mist measures soil moisture and waters your lawn on demand

As seemingly everything inside of our homes are becoming automated, shouldn’t our yards be as well? While having a perfectly manicured, lush green lawn is a dream to just about everyone, only some are willing to put in the effort required. Not to mention, full-time jobs and other obligations tend to get in the way. Fortunately, one Redwood City-based startup has devised what they’re billing as the “world’s smartest sprinkler system,” which will do all of the handwork for you.

Mist is comprised of a 16-zone sprinkler controller with up to 50 easy-to-use sensors that can be spread throughout your property. These sensors are capable of tracking an assortment of real-time data, including soil moisture, sun intensity and temperature, and automatically optimizing irrigation for each part of your yard with up to 50% less water. Meaning, not only will it make your grass greener, it’ll keep more green in your wallets as well.

The information collected by each sensor is streamed wirelessly to the controller, which then combines the data with weather forecasts and user preferences to determine the optimal time and location to replenish the lawn. On top of that, keeping tabs on soil moisture allows Mist to hydrate the grass just enough, eliminating any possibility of ever overwatering.

For those of us in drought-riden areas like California, Mist applies the minimum amount of H2) necessary in order to keep selected non-tolerant plants alive during such difficult times. Oppositely, should it rain, the irrigation system will know to keep the sprinklers off for days.

Mist works by connecting to any standard 24VAC in-ground sprinkler systems and an accompanying mobile app, which lets you easily monitor and manage from after. The app provides you with full control over all the functions of your sprinklers, including manually turning on/off zones, setting restricted days and hours to avoid watering, and configuring advanced customizations. And designed with smart home compatibility in mind, Mist will integrate with many of today’s most popular platforms like Nest, HomeKit and SmartThings, to name a few.

The controller links to home Wi-Fi network to enable remote control from the Mist app as well as integration with third-party services, such as weather. Each of the sensors are waterproof and thermal-insulated, and are made of high UV and impact-resistant plastic to withstand the elements for years. What’s more, they are solar-powered and feature a rechargeable LiFePO4 battery, as well as employ long-range, low-power wireless technology that can span over one mile in a direct line-of-sight.

Are you among the millions of city dwellers that ride a bike to work in the morning? If you’re looking to make your commute from home to the office a bit more efficient, then CMYK 4.0 may be for you. Created by New York City-based startup Brooklyness, the foldable electronic bike will automatically reroute you should there be any construction, traffic jams or pothole-filled streets in your way.

The smart bike is packed with several features including advanced hardware and mobile integration. CYMK 4.0 is equipped with a gyroscope and an accelerometer to analyze the terrain and map the road, a cadence sensor to determine how fast you are pedaling and to adjust parameters for a smooth ride, a built-in heart rate monitor on its grips to track performance, and an Atmel MCU to process the information gathered by each of its sensors.

An accompanying app is tasked with crunching the collected data and displaying it on your smartphone over Bluetooth. What’s more, the e-bike boasts a phone charger directly on its handlebar so you can power your mobile device on-the-go, a 24V lithium battery, and a 250W motor that allows for 30 miles of assisted riding on a single charge.

Not only does the e-bike’s embedded sensors determine the condition of the road as you ride it, upon getting to their destination, the app will prompt you to answer a few questions about the traveled course. The more people riding, the more data that can be garnered to generate a map of the best routes to take. This can help you decide which way to go in order to avoid Greenwich Village’s cobblestones, for example.

Its app also enables you keep tabs on performance by measuring things like calories burned, average heart rate, and peaks and lows so you can target which areas of your daily commute to increase speed. Aside from your smartphone, a web-based dashboard lets you take a closer look at battery rate of discharge, charging time and how power consumption changes along your route. You can even plan your commute and socialize with other cyclists to organize a group ride or to receive helpful advice.

Designed with safety and security in mind, the CMYK 4.0 includes an electronic lock that will sound if the bike is ever moved, an RFID tag for easy locating, app-controlled headlights for visibility, and laser beams that project a virtual lane on the road. Beyond that, the two-wheeler is super portable, weighing just 25 pounds and can be folded up to make for easily carrying on public transit or stowing away at work.

The Opal is a countertop nugget ice maker for your home

Contrary to what you may believe, ice is no longer just for chilling drinks, preserving meats and treating sprains. In areas like the South, it’s become a munchable snack for extremely hot summer days. FirstBuild — a co-creation space founded by GE and Local Motors — will let you satisfy your nugget cravings from right inside your own home with an affordable countertop maker. And while similar machines may already be on the market today, their price tag keeps them out of reach from most everyday consumers who aren’t looking to shell out upwards of two to three thousand dollars. Instead, Opal can soon be yours for a mere fraction of the cost ($499).

Having had the chance to see it firsthand at Maker Faire Bay Area, Opal boasts a sleek, aesthetically-pleasing design that will surely match the decor of any kitchen. The stainless steel device plugs into an electrical outlet and holds three pounds of ice, which is about as much as a typical refrigerator. Opal produces its first nuggets in 15 minutes, and can create a pound of ice each hour. The unit, which measures 16.5” x 10.5” x 14”, includes a crystal-clear, removable bin that easily slides out and tilts forward for access to the ice, as well as a capacitive touch interface for control. And you know what makes it even cooler (no pun intended)? It has an Arduino Micro (ATmega32U4) driving its indicator light!

What’s more, the Opal can be plugged into any standard 120V outlet and doesn’t require a dedicated water line to operate. The machine works by packing together small ice crystals, forming nuggets of soft yet crunchy ice. Not only do they cool down beverages like your coffee or soda faster than conventional cubes, the air pockets in each nugget absorb the flavor of the drink as it drops in temp, leaving a chewable and tasty refreshment for those who enjoy snacking on the ice when the liquid is gone.

For those unfamiliar with the community, FirstBuild is a new model of manufacturing that challenges Makers from around the world to dream up home appliance innovations. Earlier this year, Atmel had the opportunity to sponsor its inaugural 33-hour mega hackathon that brought together more than 200 DIYers, designers and engineers at its microfactory in Louisville to mod and build sci-fi-like equipment for the smart house of tomorrow. Evident by the sheer volume of ingenuity from that weekend, the crowdsourced design of Opal is just the beginning of real IoT applications generated by the Maker community.

Want one for your kitchen? The wait is almost over, as Opal made its debut on Indiegogo on July 28th — a date that also marked the one-year anniversary of FirstBuild. Keep in mind, this isn’t the co-creation community’s first crowdfunding effort either. Back in January, the team garnered over $316,000 for its Paragon Induction Cooktop, and the nugget ice maker has well surpassed its sibling’s success. The Opal ranks ninth on Indiegogo’s top 10 list of campaigns that have raised the most funds in 24 hours, and the 13^th fastest to reach the half million dollar mark.

The initial batch of units is expected to begin shipping in July 2016 — right in time to help keep cool next summer!

Have you ever wondered about the efficiency of your solar panels or just how much energy was being consumed inside your home? Luckily, there’s an open source monitor that can now provide an answer to those questions. Simply plug Hicosy into your photovoltaic system and smart meter, and immediately begin receiving real-time information and alerts.

Driven by an Arduino Yún (ATmega32U4), Hicosy comes in two different versions: one for data transmission over WiFi, the other using a cellular network. Each kit is comprised of a custom board, a microSD card, an Arduino GSM shield and some cables and accessories, all housed inside a specially-designed enclosure.

The kits work by connecting to the inverter, as well as either a HAN via Wi-Fi/Ethernet or a GSM network. From there, Hicosy is able to continuously collect energy production data such as voltage and current, and the status of your plant including warning messages, rate comparison and estimated gross revenue.

Acquired information is then transmitted to secure cloud application where it stored for personal monitoring using the web-based dashboard or mobile app. This allows anyone, ranging from homeowners to facility operators, to easily manage their energy activity and immediately receive push-notifications should something go wrong.
