The Atmel-powered Baboi Box is an all-in-one controller that can be used with almost any type of stepper motor-based 3D printer, including the popular Prusa and Original Mendel (RepRap).
“Baboi Box [allows Makers to] fully control 3D printers without connecting to any other device,” Baboi creator Qiang Guo explained in a recent Kickstarter post.
“[Basically], it’s an easy to use (and install) electronic kit that is pre-labelled, properly set up and well organized. All you need to do is find the right pins and make simple connections.”
The Baboi Box is built around Atmel’s ATmega2560 microcontroller (MCU). Additional key hardware specs include:

- 248KB Flash Memory

- 4KB EEPROM
- 12V input voltage
- 16 MHz clock speed
- 4 x Integrated Allegro A4982 motor drivers
- PWN fan
- Heatbed
- 4 endstops
- External serial ports
- External I2C ports
- External reset pins
- SD card reader
- 20X4 LCD display
- Joystick controller
- Cooling Fan
- Laser cut wood case
In addition, says Qiang, the Baboi Box offers three primary printing modes. The first, SD card printing, allows Makers to store gcode on a microSD card.
Once inserted, Baboi Box will automatically read the code and begin printing. The second mode – manual control – is perhaps best suited for open source 3D printers. Last, but certainly not least, PC mode allows users to connect their 3D printers to a computer.
